o Alpharetta-based Wave7 Optics Raises $15.5 Million in 3rd Round
Alpharetta, Ga.-- Alpharetta-based Wave7 Optics, a developer of optical
access equipment, announced on Thursday that is has raised $15.5 million
in its third round of funding. Oak Investment Partners led the round;
other investors included Morgenthaler Ventures, Advanced Technology
Ventures, Lucent Venture Partners, Mellon Ventures, and Armada Venture
Partners. Wave7 Optics's has developed technology for the "last mile" of
broadband Internet connections. The company's offerings provide video,
high-speed data and telephony services to subscribers using fiber-optic
lines.

o IBM to Build Emergency Communications System for DC Metro Area
Washington, DC -- Hoping to avoid the kinds of communications problems
that plagued rescuers following the Sept. 11 attacks, a partnership of
public safety and transportation agencies in Virginia, Maryland and
Washington, DC on Thursday chose IBM, one of RTP's largest employers, to
build a regional public safety data communications network. The network,
which will be the first wireless system of its kind to span multi-state
government jurisdictions, will allow officials from more than 40 local,
state and federal agencies to communicate with each other via instant
messages and chat rooms. The Capital Wireless Integrated Network also will
be designed to allow firefighters, police, transportation officials and
other emergency personnel to access government data sources during
critical incidents.

o Banner Pharma Adding 100 New Jobs in High Point
High Point, N.C. -- Electing to consolidate its Los Angeles operation to
High Point, Banner Pharmacaps, a pharmaceutical capsule manufacturer, said
that it will hire an additional 100 employees for the North Carolina
facility by March 2003. The company opened its $45 million facility in
High Point in 1996. With the new hires, the company will employ about 600
people in the 250,000-square-foot facility.

o Madison Keats Plans New Hires Growth in Charlotte
Charlotte, N.C. -- With a relatively high level of activity in the
biotechnology sector, Charlotte-based Madison Keats, an investment banking
firm that specializes in the field, is reportedly planning to double its
staff and move into larger offices. Currently headquartered at Three
Wachovia Center, the company has a staff of 26 now, but plans to expand
its team of analysts and associates to launch a specialized consulting
division. The firm said that the new consulting arm will provide strategy
assessment, intellectual property auditing, and deal structuring services
to the biotechnology community.

o Altamonte Springs-based GlobeNet Acquires Archipelago
Altamonte Springs, Fla. -- Altamonte Springs-based GlobeNet, the operator
of an electronic communications network for Nasdaq and over-the-counter
stocks, has agreed to be acquired by Chicago-based Archipelago, the
operator of an electronic national stock exchange. Financial terms of the
agreement were not disclosed. The acquisition is scheduled to close later
this year.

o World Theatre Inc. Receives U.S. Patent; Hires CSFB as Advisor
Raleigh, N.C. -- With a newly issued U.S. patent for technology that
distributes digital movies to cinemas, Raleigh-based World Theatre Inc., a
venture capital-backed developer of digital content delivery and
management systems, has hired Credit Suisse First Boston as its financial
advisor for a second round of venture capital. The company has raised $30
million in debt and equity so far. World Theatre announced a license
agreement with BMG North America last October. The company is headed by
Robert Summer, the former president of Sony Music and RCA Records. Its
newly issued patent covers a business method for distributing and
scheduling digital movie content to cinemas and electronic billboards.

(Pompano Beach, Fla.) Pompano Beach-based WavePower.Net, a publicly traded
communications technology company, said that it has acquired Better Call
Home Inc., the owner of global marketing rights to an Internet-based
telephone system. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
WavePower.Net said that it plans to change its name to TelcoBlue and begin
offering its telephone service under that brand name.

(Atlanta) Atlanta-based XcelleNet, a provider of mobile communications
technology, has co-developed a new product with Intel Corp. that enhances
Intel's products for managing mobile computers and communication devices.
XcelleNet said that the new product allows network managers at large
organizations to quickly incorporate device management and data
synchronization features into their support network for mobile PCs,
handheld PDAs and other mobile wireless devices.

and services for the biotechnology sector, has named Kerry May as its vice
president of worldwide sales and Suzanne Miglucci as its vice president of

worldwide sales with DataDirect Technologies/Merant, PLC. Miglucci was
formerly senior vice president of marketing with MicroMass Communications.

(Tampa) Tampa-based DataMentors, a provider of products for ensuring the
quality of data, said on Thursday that it is opening a new office in
England to be headed by Kevin Appleton, the former commercial director for
Liverpool-based Crawfords Computing. Appleton will focus on building sales
of DataMentors' database marketing software, as well as establishing joint
ventures with partners in the U.K. and mainland Europe. This is
DataMentors' first overseas office.
